The different shapes of stones
The stones that are encrusted on our jewelry can have different shapes. That is why, today we are going to tell you about these.
The Round shape was suggested by Marcel Tolkowsky in 1919 as the ideal shape for a diamond. This way of cutting stone requires many mathematical calculations. The stone, then cut in circles, has 57 or 58 facets, in order to maximize fire, shine and brilliance. This shape is the one that provides the greatest shine among all other gem sizes, this is why this size is strongly used for engagement or wedding rings.
The Cushion shape draws the gem squarely or rectangularly sometimes, but always with rounded edges. It's a pretty soft shape, a good compromise between a round gem and a square gem. This stone cut, close to the round cut, also brings out an extreme brilliance and a superb shine. It has 58 facets.
The Oval shape is also part of the family of the brightest sizes. Its 58 facets highlight the purity and color of the gem. Colored stones are often cut according to this shape. This pretty shape gives the illusion of a longer and thinner finger.
The Pear shape combines, on one side, a soft and round appearance of the gem and, on the other hand, a very sharp shape, like a blade. This form can be likened to a "drop of water". We find in particular this size of gem at the end of the pendant.
The Heart shape has 59 facets, which therefore promises a sparkling shine and maximum shine. To be successful, the gem must be cut in a perfectly symmetrical way: the well-rounded edges, and the tip very sharp. This shape is often found in solitary ring, sometimes in pendants or earrings.
The Marquise form, also called shuttle, takes up the idea of an oval shape, but much more tapered on both ends. This gem size gives the visual impression of a larger gem. It also makes it possible to lengthen the finger and make it look thinner. This form comes from the 18th century. It was King Louis XIV who created it in order to offer it to the Marquise de Pompadour.
The Princess shape characterizes a very square size. It is the second most popular form, behind the famous round form. It has between 58 and 76 facets, which makes the gem extremely bright. Despite its very square shape at first glance, the bottom of the stone, which is called the breech, is cut like a round waist, which increases the fire and shine.
The Radiant shape is a softened square. The shape is square, or rectangular, but with straight cut edges. The gem, then cut in radiant, has 60 to 70 facets, thus optimizing the shine and shine.
The Emerald shape is a softened rectangle. The emerald shape takes a rectangular shape, but, like the radiant shape, with the corners cut off. It is a so-called "staircase" size. At first, this stone cut was reserved only for emerald (hence the name of this form), but now it has become more popular and is used for all types of gems. This rather elongated shape is very flattering on the finger.
The Baguette shape is a long, rectangular shape. This size, unique and precise, allows to arrange several gems of this same shape side by side, in particular on a pendant, or by surrounding a center stone.
The Trillon shape emphasizes brilliance and color. This shape can vary: sometimes we will find a triangle with the rather rounded edges, and others, with the sharp and straight cut edges. This size has 43 facets. Symmetry remains essential for the proper dispersion of light on the gem. The tips of the triangle are quite fragile and therefore require a frame that protects them. We usually find this size in solitary ring.
The Asscher shape is a square with a degree size, that is, a stepped waist for example, just like the emerald shape. This shape highlights the purity of the stone as well as its color.
